This collection of 3 paintings in a series illustrates the map of the maritime city of Liverpool and Merseyside in northwest England. As a city and urban planner, I appreciate the beautiful coast lines and cruise ship activities.

Coming from Singapore to visit Liverpool in January 2020 for the first time, my wife and I were delighted to know that Liverpool is famous as a port during the late 19th and early 20th century. And of course, all over the world, we fondly sing the songs of The Beatles and madly watch the games of Liverpool football teams.

Even more awesome for us to learn that the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” began life on Broadway as part of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical show, Carousel, which was premiered in 1945.

The show was an instant hit – perhaps because the song’s messages of triumph in times of adversity spoke to the wartime crowds of April 1945 – less than a month before the end of World War Two.

Based on the song that was adopted by Scottish team Celtic after a 1966 Cup Winner’s Cup semi-final against Liverpool at Anfield and is now sung by Celtic fans prior to every home European tie, and later by Germany’s Borussia Dortmund, which Liverpool went on to play in the cup final.

“When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark

At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone….”
